Police probe reason for Brisbane murder

Police say that an alleged attack by one Gold Coast man left another dead wasn't random. (AAP)

How two Gold Coast men became entangled in a dispute at a Brisbane home that left one dead and the other charged with murder remains a mystery to police.

A 52-year-old Carrara man suffered critical head injuries and died at the scene after arriving at a Tingalpa address on Sunday night.

Police say he got involved in a verbal altercation that turned physical with another 52-year-old man from Tamborine Mountain who has since been charged with his murder.

The two men were known to each other, although police are uncertain to what extent or if they'd previously interacted.

"At this point, it's early days in this investigation," Detective Acting Inspector Warren Gibbs told reporters on Sunday.

"I want to stress to the community that it wasn't a random attack. It was planned to some degree."

Other people, also known to the Carrara man, were inside the home at the time and witnessed the incident.

Police wouldn't reveal how the victim came to suffer the fatal head injuries and are investigating what the Carrara man was doing in Brisbane.

Det Gibbs hopes witnesses can shed light on the nature of the argument that transpired before the alleged assault.

But he urged any family or friends of the Carrara man with information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers.

His alleged murderer is scheduled to face Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.
