Bushland body find in WA ends with alleged killer questioned over 1992 murder mystery in Victoria

A man charged with the murder of a woman whose body was found in West Australian bushland is being questioned by Victorian police over a cold case murder from the early 1990s.

The body of 59-year-old Medina woman Dianne Barrett was discovered on Sunday about 30 kilometres from her home in bushland in Karrakup, on the outskirts of Perth's south-east.

A neighbour first raised the alarm about Ms Barrett's disappearance in May last year.

She was last seen at a hardware store in the nearby Perth suburb of Rockingham two weeks earlier.

The 52-year-old man was arrested in Wembley on Sunday morning, and appeared in a Perth court yesterday.

Victorian police said he had also been interviewed by detectives from the Victoria Police homicide squad in relation to the murder of 28-year-old Annette Steward in Geelong West in 1992.

Ms Steward's body was found by a friend who let himself into her home and found her dead in a bedroom.

She had been strangled.

Police at the time said Ms Steward worked at a factory in Point Henry, left work and went shopping before returning home.

She had tea with four male friends later in the day, and her body was discovered by the friend the next day.

No charges have been laid yet over the cold case murder, but Victoria Police said they were not looking for anyone else and the investigation was ongoing.

In 2015, police offered a $1 million reward for information in relation to Ms Steward's death.
