Police probe into possible stabbing in Ayrshire street

The Post has learned that two people were injurued during the incident that happened just after 9pm in the town’s Main Street on Saturday- right at the height Prestfest 2019 Music Festival.

Some premises were even forced to close their doors early and keep revellers inside for their own personal safety as troubled flared outside.

Police combed the Main Street on Saturday night, which was packed with visitors to the music festival, as well as local music fans, as they launched an immediate investigation into the trouble.

But there’s been some suggestions on social media that a bladed weapon, such as a knife, or even a corkscrew, was used in the attack, although Police Scotland have refused to confirm, or deny, this.

The two victims were men aged 34 and 23.

Police say the attacks on both are “connected” but would not give any further information. The extent of the victims'  injuries are not currently known.

Prestwick town centre councillor Hugh Hunter described the incident as “horrific” and “out of character” for the area.

He told The Post: “I have spoken with the police and am reassured that they have the matter well in hand.”

Saturday’s incident has cast a shadow over what had been an excellent day of entertainment.

During the day the Prestwick Prom Day took centre stage at the beach, following a parade from the town’s Sainsbury’s store, offering family-friendly activities, including a funfair.

And then it was the turn of the music festival, where several restaurants and bars opened their doors to larger-than-usual groups of people.

Some locals have questioned the wisdom of hosting two separate events in the town on the same day, where drink is freely available at both, saying it was “not an ideal mix.”

One party goer said: “It’s a long day of boozing for a lot of people.

“The sun had been out and the prom was on the same day, so maybe just not an ideal mix.”

She added: “Saturday night was a bit out of hand compared to what it normally is.”

And another reveller added: “It’s too busy and under policed.”

A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that two men aged 34 and 23 were assaulted on Main Street, Prestwick, around 9.05pm on Saturday in what was a connected incident.

“A positive line of enquiry is currently ongoing in relation to this matter.”
