Police probe car set on fire in Lanarkshire village while residents slept inside

Two men deliberately set fire to a car parked in the driveway of a Lanarkshire home while residents slept inside.

They were seen driving towards Bell Grove in Law before torching the vehicle and running off afterwards.

Police are appealing for witnesses of the incident which took place on Sunday, May 23.

It happened between midnight and 12.15am.

Fire crews rushed to the scene and put out the blaze which caused extensive damage to the targeted car.

Fortunately, no-one was injured in the incident.

Cops say they have established through CCTV that a dark coloured car drove on Waterlands Road up to the junction at Bell Grove, before stopping.

Then, two men walked into the street towards the property while a third unidentified person remained at the car.

Police Constable Iain Denholm of Lanark Police Station said: "The vehicle was parked on a driveway close to the property where the occupants were asleep inside.

"If the fire has spread to the house then the consequences could have been far more severe.

"Our enquiries are ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who have seen any suspicious activity around the area between 11.45pm on Saturday, 22 May until around 12.20am on Sunday to get in touch.

"Anyone who can help is asked to call 101, quoting incident 0110 of 23 May, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
