Police are probing the discovery of a burnt out car discovered in Cumbernauld on Thursday night.
Officers scrambled to Etvie Drive in the Condorrat area of the North Lanarkshire town after the alarm was raised just before 10pm on Thursday night.
A Vauxhall Corsa was found to be on fire.
An eyewitness told the Daily Record how they saw forensic officers crawling over a white motor, with what appeared to be a shotgun being taken away from the scene.
They said: "It had been there for hours before it was covered and lifted by police.
"The windows were all smashed and it looked like someone had tried to set fire to it too.

"Forensics were all over it.
"They left the scene with what looked like a shotgun that they covered in a piece of cloth, but you could see it sticking out."
Photographs show a large part of the residential area sealed off.
Several cops, including forensics officers, can be seen working on the street next to the car, which sits on the back of a recovery lorry.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances around a Vauxhall Corsa that was reported on fire on Etive Crescent, Cumbernauld, around 9.50pm on Thursday, 26 August.
"Anyone with information should contact us on 101 quoting incident number 3735 of August 26."
We previously reported how a shooting victim was left fighting for his life after being blasted in a targeted attack in Glasgow's Milton area on Thursday night.
A 44-year-old man, named locally as John McGregor, was left in critical condition following the incident, which took place on Westray Street around 7.55pm.
Video showed the suspect casually jogging back to a white getaway car, with what looks to be a firearm in his hands.
This morning, we told how McGregor was gunned down at close range as part of a feud between rival factions of the Daniel family.
A witness revealed the moment the shooter’s weapon – believed to be a shotgun – jammed before firing at the second attempt in front of terrified children.

They said: “The victim got shot at point-blank range.
“When the guy first went to shoot him, it’s as if the gun jammed and he had to try again.
“It was aimed right to the chest. The victim just collapsed and the man with the gun ran off and got into a white car.
“It looked like he was carrying a long bit of wood but then it turned out to be a shotgun.
“There were kids out playing in the street – three wee boys who looked shocked.”
Sources said Thursday night’s sickening violence was triggered by a former close associate of dead gangster Kevin “Gerbil” Carroll.
He is said to have deliberately driven a Transit van into a Mercedes car in Westray Street, in Glasgow’s Milton, shortly before McGregor was shot, insiders claimed.
Police would not confirm if the two incidents were linked when asked by the Daily Record this afternoon.
Last night, Police Scotland asked members of the public to come forward with information on the incident which they described as a “targeted attack”.
Detective Superintendent Raymond Brown, of the Major Investigations Team and Senior Investigating Officer, said: “A man has sustained life- threatening injuries as a result of this and we are appealing to members of the public to help trace those responsible.
“The area of Westray Street is very residential and we are certain that there will be people who may have witnessed something that can help with our investigation.
“If you have any information, no matter how small, please get in contact with us as soon as possible.”
