Police probe after the death of a 99-year-old female nursing home resident

A police investigation has been launched after the death of a 99-year-old nursing home resident.

One staff member at Northlands Nursing Home, where the woman lived, has been questioned by police.

Northumbria Police confirmed that officers were called to the Morpeth home on the afternoon of February 5 following "concern" for the pensioner.

"It was reported that a 99-year-old woman was unresponsive and was taken to hospital where she was sadly pronounced dead," said a force spokesperson.

"A 47-year-old woman has been interviewed under caution by officers and enquiries remain ongoing."

ChronicleLive understands the woman spoke with police as a voluntary attender.

A spokesperson for the Kings Avenue home said: "We can confirm that we are fully supporting the police as they conduct inquiries."

The home is currently rated as 'Good' by the CQC following an unannounced August inspection.

According to the watchdog's website, the home provides accommodation for up to 35 people with a range of needs, including those with dementia.

"People said they felt safe and happy living at the home," states the CQC's report.

"There were systems and procedures in place to help keep people safe."
