Police probe after telecom sites in Glasgow hit by firebugs

Police have launched a probe after firebugs set blazes at telecommunications sites in Glasgow.

A fibre underground chamber in Threestone Hill and a copper cabling underground chamber in Croftspar Drive at Springboig Avenue has fires set within them.

A number of similar sites have been attacked across the UK- with some linked to conspiracy theories that coronavirus is spread by 5G.

A 70ft phone tower was set ablaze in Birmingham this month.

The latest attacks happened between midnight on Thursday and 1am on Friday.

The chamber at Croftspar Drive was then set alight again between 2am on Friday and 8am on Saturday.

Detective Sergeant Lisa MacDonald said ‘We believe these three incident are linked. Neither of these chambers are 5G sites.

"Not only is fire-raising dangerous, this has caused severe disruption to several hundred businesses and home customers, who during these challenging times will be relying on virtual technology and the phone to keep in contact with customers, family and friends.

"Anyone who knows who is responsible, should call Police Scotland on 101 quoting 0726 of 24 April."
