Police have launched an investigation after a mannequin of Greta Thunberg was found hanging from a bridge in Rome.

Rome's mayor Virginia Raggi posted a photograph of the effigy on Twitter, slamming it as "shameful", as Italian police opened an inquiry into "aggravated threats".

A sign saying "Greta is your God" was reportedly attached onto the effigy along. The mannequin was wearing pigtails, which is how the climate activist usually wears her hair.

Ms Raggi condemned the stunt and offered "solidarity and that of the whole of Rome" to the teenager.

She said in a tweet: "Shameful the mannequin of @GretaThunberg found hanging from a bridge in our city.

"To her and her family my solidarity and that of the whole @Roma.

"Our climate commitment does not stop."

Firefighters removed the effigy of the Swedish activist, la Republica said.

The 16-year-old has become one of the world's most high-profile climate campaigners.

She first hit the headlines in 2018 when she inspired international youth climate strikes.

Notable political figures and celebrities - such as Barack Obama and Arnold Schwarzenegger - have come out in support of the activist.

Ms Thunberg is currently visiting American Indian reservations in the Dakotas to talk about oil pipelines.
