Police probe after man found dead at scene of Houghton-le-Spring caravan fire

A man has been found dead following a fire at a caravan site in Houghton-le-Spring.

Northumbria Police is investigating the death after the tragic discovery on Friday morning.

A spokesperson said: “Shortly after 10am (on Friday) we were alerted by the ambulance service to a fire inside a caravan off Blind Lane, Houghton-le-Spring.

“Emergency services attended and the body of a male was discovered. A formal identification process is ongoing and officers are carrying out enquiries to ascertain the cause of the fire.

“The man’s family has been notified. Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 276 060320.”

It's understood the blaze took place at the Showmen's Guild caravan site, where three fire engines fought to bring the fire under control from around 10am on Friday morning.

Despite their efforts, one caravan was completely destroyed.

The North East Ambulance service has confirmed it sent crews to the site, but they were not required.
