Police probe 'abhorrent' racist graffiti found across Newcastle's West End

Racist graffiti has been found across Newcastle's West End - including yards from a primary school.

Police are treating the awful slurs, spray-painted on walls and etched on bollards, as a hate crime.

Graffiti was found near Broadwood Primary School and some on Slatyford field.

“This kind of mindless vandalism and the abhorrent message it seeks to portray is completely at odds with the values of our city," said Cllr John-Paul Stephenson, Newcastle City Council cabinet member for Environment and Regulatory Services."

“Newcastle is a safe and welcoming city where hate crimes such as this will not be tolerated. It is completely unacceptable and we will be taking swift action to remove it."

After ChronicleLive flagged the graffiti up with the authority, an Envirocall team came out to remove it.

However Northumbria Police has warned those behind the messages will be dealt with "robustly" if they are caught.

"We are aware of a number of incidents of racist graffiti being daubed across the west end of Newcastle," added a force spokesperson.

“They are currently being treated as suspected hate crimes and anybody found to be responsible will be dealt with robustly.

“There is no place for behaviour like this in our communities and we take such offences very seriously.

“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log 750 020321.”
