Police plea as Bristol people ignore ban on visiting Wales

Bristol day-trippers are still being caught at Welsh beauty spots, in breach of the stricter lockdown restrictions there.

Police issued another plea on Twitter today (Thursday), after people from Bristol and London were questioned by officers.

In a tweet shared this afternoon (Thursday), Ystradgynlais Police said: "Patrols carried out around key hotspots. Wales is still in lockdown so please do not travel.

"There have been cars travelling from as far as Bristol and London. Please follow the Welsh Government Guidelines."

The town of Ystradgynlais is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, an 88-mile drive from Bristol.

While people in England are now allowed to travel as far as they like to get fresh air and exercise, the same rule does not yet apply in Wales.

Residents in Wales are still being instructed to stay local, however, and people crossing over from England face a £60 fine for flouting the rules.

Among the exceptions is for people travelling to and from work, but "only where it is not reasonably practicable to work from home".

Information on the gov.wales website states: "We receive weekly updates from the four police forces in Wales, which monitor compliance with the regulations, we also monitor traffic flow on all main routes in and into Wales.

"We understand that having slightly different rules in Wales and England may be confusing for some, particularly along the border, and we are working very hard to make sure people are aware that in Wales, the Welsh rules apply.

"Travelling to Wales to spend time in the countryside or at the coast is not allowed under Welsh law.

"We will use whatever means are available to convey this message, including signs on the major roads and motorways and articles in local newspapers along our borders."

Guidance on the Visit Wales website also urges tourists to delay any trips, adding: "Please do not visit Wales at this time and avoid all unnecessary travel within Wales. Following these guidelines will save lives.

"We look forward to welcoming you back in future; but for now, let’s all stay safe."

WalesOnline reports a large family from the Midlands were fined earlier this week, for travelling more than 100 miles for a day at Porthcawl beach.

Another man, from the east coast of England, was arrested on Monday on suspicion of driving under the influence, having travelled almost 200 miles to North Wales.
