Police patrols stepped up to target yobs at Dumfries' Castledykes Park

Police have stepped up patrols targeting yobs gathering at a Dumfries park.

Castledykes has seen groups of up to 150 youths regularly gathering at night blasting out music and smashing glass bottles across paths.

Council workers have been left to clean up the mess left behind several times a week.

Constable Hayley McKerlie said: “I’m one of the school campus officers so young people causing issues in the community is a priority for me.

“We’re aware that there’s been quite a few reports of youths gathering in Castledykes. We’re trying to target the issue as best we can and we’re putting extra patrols on to go in the area.

“Hopefully there shouldn’t be as many issues going forward. Gathering just now when they’re not supposed to because of the Covid guidance is one thing but to be smashing bottles across the paths that dog walkers and other people use is beyond a joke.”

In October, yobs smashed a pumpkin trail which had been set up in the park by the People’s Project for children to enjoy at Hallowe’en.

Police have also advised anyone with similar issues in Dumfries to contact them so they can look into antisocial behaviour.

PC McKerlie added: “We’re aware at this time of the year people might not want the hassle of calling us but if people don’t phone us to let us know something is going on then we can’t respond to it.

“If people don’t want to call they can email the community policing team at nithsdaleCPT@Scotland.pnn.police.uk.”
