Police patrolling Nottingham city centre to make sure drivers not making 'unnecessary' journeys

Nottinghamshire Police officers have been patrolling the city centre to make sure drivers are only making essential journeys.

On Monday evening (March 23) Boris Johnson announced strict measures whereby people may only leave their homes for essentials, for medical supplies or to help those who are vulnerable amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Government gave police forces new powers to enforce the lockdown, including fines of £60 - or £120 for a second offence - and even the power to arrest those who continue to ignore warnings.

Dispersal powers were also given to officers who come upon groups of more than two people, and drivers are now being stopped to make sure their journey is essential.

Nottinghamshire Police's special constables, volunteer police officers who have the same powers as regular police, were out in the city on Friday, March 27.

The force said: "Our Notts SCOS officers have been in the city supporting response and making sure drivers are only travelling for necessary journeys."

The patrols took place shortly after crowds of people gathered in Clifton.

Officers issued a plea to shoppers, saying: "These scenes need to stop now, we need everyone to help."
