Police patrol buses in Gedling after complaints school children not wearing masks

Police officers have been conducting patrols on buses travelling through Gedling after passengers raised concerns children were not wearing face coverings on the way to school.

Nottinghamshire Police says Nottingham City Transport had received "a number of complaints" from members of the public which concerned school children on the 25, 26 and 27 services from Southwell to Carlton.

Officers therefore conducted patrols on the buses on November 30 and December 1 to issue advice to those not adhering to the rules.

The patrols come as Tier 3 restrictions were re-imposed across Nottinghamshire on December 2, following a second national lockdown amid soaring coronavirus case numbers and hospitalisations.

Police officers said they had two "targets" in particular, including the 26 and 26A services which take pupils to Carlton Academy, Carlton le Willows and Minster schools.

Gedling Police said: "It’s very difficult for drivers to enforce, as all they can do is remind children as they board.

"Carlton Police conducted on-board patrols to ensure the safety of passengers in that they adhere to NCT's Covid regulations, which is to wear a face mask whilst travelling on the buses.

"We had to advise approximately 10 children to wear face masks, to which they complied with when spoken to by police.

"One passenger stated he was not exempt and didn't have a face mask, so officers provided the passenger with a mask.

"May we remind passengers using the service to wear a mask, to be in place before they enter the bus, covering the mouth and nose."
