$250K bail for parolee suspected of attempted store, bank robberies in Loop

July 09--Bail was set at $250,000 Thursday for a man who was paroled late last month and accused of trying to rob two businesses and a bank this week in the Loop, police said.

Matthew A. Taglia, 40, appeared for a bond hearing Thursday afternoon at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Taglia, of the 100 block of Jackson Lane in Bloomingdale, was charged with two counts of attempted aggravated robbery, according to Chicago police.

At 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Taglia tried to rob a small retail store in the 100 block of West Madison Street, police said. Less than an hour later, at 9:53 a.m., he tried to rob a hotel gift shop in the 200 block of North Michigan Avenue, police said.

Taglia was identified as the person who entered both businesses and passed a note to an employee demanding money, while implying that he was carrying a firearm, police said. But in both incidents, Taglia left without any proceeds.

He was arrested on the 100 block of West Randolph Street about 12:15 p.m.

Police learned Taglia also had an active parole violation warrant, and he is expected to appear in court on the attempted robbery charges Thursday afternoon.

Taglia was also later identified as the person who robbed a bank in the 600 block of South Clark Street about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Details on those charges were not available from police.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, Taglia was paroled from the Dixon Correctional Center on June 29 after being convicted of receiving, possessing or selling a stolen vehicle.
