Police outline school run rules as coronavirus cases soar

Merseyside Police has urged parents to observe social distancing or wear a face mask while taking and collecting children from school.

Strict new rules come into force from tomorrow to curb the spread of coronavirus, with social gatherings limited to six people.

Exemptions include workplaces, schools, universities, places of worship and more..

The new rules reflect growing concern about a rising number of cases of the disease and a potential return of the pandemic.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson has warned the city was heading for a local lockdown after worryingly high cases.

Now Merseyside Police has offered advice to parents dropping and collecting children from Merseyside's schools.

The force tweeted: "We can all do our bit to keep the R rate down & try to avoid further restrictions being introduced in Merseyside.

"There are simple steps you can take on the school run tomorrow - keep 2m from other parents & guardians, & wear a mask if that isn't possible."

A number of Merseyside's schools have been forced to send pupils homes.

St John's Catholic Junior School in Bebington and St Andrews of the Apostle in Halewood are the latest schools to be affected.

At St John's, the whole of Year 6 have been instructed to self-isolate after a pupil from that year tested positive for coronavirus.

Parents with children at St Andrews of the Apostle in Halewood received correspondence on Thursday that there was a "confirmed case of Covid-19."

It advised that children should self-isolate for 14 days.
