Police out in force on the coast as Government reissues warning to stay indoors over Easter weekend

Police officers patrolled popular seaside areas of the North East as the Government urged people not to be tempted out on a sunny Easter Saturday.

Beaches were near-deserted on Good Friday, but the coast was "fairly busy" in the Saturday sunshine.

Police have been out in force across the country this weekend to enforce lockdown rules, but Northumbria Police has said the public in the North East have been largely respectful of the vital regulations intended to slow the spread of Covid-19.

There were isolated incidents of police having to approach people enjoying the outdoors - including several surfers who took to the waves on Friday at Tynemouth.

The increased police presence comes as the Government issues fresh warnings to stay inside - saying the lockdown could last longer if rules aren't followed.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock told BBC Breakfast: “The current thinking, which is important for every single person, is you should stay at home because that protects the NHS and saves lives.

“Of course we keep all these things under review and the scientific committee that advises us is meeting and looking at the evidence this week.

“This weekend it is hot outside but everybody needs to stay at home.

“We are just starting to see the curve flatten. “We are just starting to see the number of new arrivals at hospital with coronavirus starting to flatten.

“It is too early to lift the measures and people need to stay at home.”

On Friday, England's Chief Nursing Officer Ruth May said she was "extremely frustrated" that people are still not obeying lockdown rules.

She said: "It's very, very frustrating, personally frustrating to see people clearly not doing social distancing and coming out in large groups.

"There's also still occasions where my colleagues are getting abuse from their neighbours for driving off to work.

"Our nurses need to be able to get to work, but I ask of everyone please stay at home, save lives and protect my staff."

However, police in the North East have praised the public for largely respecting the rules.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said on Friday: "We just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who is continuing to follow the stay-at-home restrictions and saving lives.

"Our officers out on patrol over today’s Bank Holiday have again found near deserted beaches and parks.

"As we head into the rest of the Bank Holiday please continue to make a difference.

"We really couldn’t be prouder of the our communities here in the North East."
