16-hour siege ends: beanbag rounds used during arrest

A siege at Muswellbrook has come to an end after police used beanbag rounds to make an arrest at the scene.

Police went to a home on Parkinson Avenue about 2.05pm on Thursday June 25 planning to execute an arrest warrant.

On arrival Hunter Valley police attempted to speak to a 58-year-old man but he refused to leave the home.

IN NEWS TODAY:

According to a police statement the man "allegedly threatened police, a perimeter was established and a siege situation developed".

Newcastle residents spotted what looked like a police riot squad truck tearing down King Street, Newcastle just before 4pm as more units were sent to the scene of the siege.

Specialist police fired beanbag rounds shortly before 6am on Friday June 26 after entering the property to arrest the man.

He was assessed by paramedics at the scene before being taken to the John Hunter Hospital for further assessment.

Inquiries into the incident by Hunter Valley Police District are continuing.

No further details will be released at this time, police said.
