Knifepoint robbery at Jesmond sparks police operation

A man armed with a knife allegedly held up a fast food restaurant on Saturday, sparking an extended police operation.

Police said the man threatened an employee at the Jesmond KFC, before stealing cash and running away on foot.

The incident, which occurred at about 11.25am, sparked an extended police operation as multiple police units converged on the scene.

The KFC restaurant in the shopping centre complex was closed and cordoned off with police tape, as police began their inquiries.

It was understood a man had been taken by ambulance to the Calvary Mater hospital at Waratah, though police confirmed there were no physical injuries resulting from the incident.

There was no immediate threat to the public, but officers remained on the scene into the afternoon where it was later confirmed their inquiries were ongoing.

The operation was understood to have concluded at about 2.30pm.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
