Police open fire at rowdy

The Sanjaynagar police on Wednesday opened fire and caught a 22-year-old rowdy-sheeter who allegedly attacked a police constable in a bid to escape from being arrested in Bhoopasandra.

The injured police constable Mallappa and the accused Sharanappa have been hospitalized.

Police said Sharanappa, who was involved in over 11 criminal cases, had attacked a man with a sword three days ago over a trivial row, and threatened passers-by by flashing the lethal weapon at them.

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case of attempt to murder and were on the lookout for Sharanappa , who was on the run. On Wednesday morning, the police, on a tip-off about his hideout, went to the vacant plot in Bhoopsandra and surrounded the area for combing.

Police constable Mallappa confronted Sharanappa and tried to catch him, but the accused attacked Mallappa and tried to escape. Inspector Balaraj warned him, and later shot at his leg to stop him from fleeing, the police said.

The Sanjaynagar police have registered a case against him for assaulting policemen on duty, and are further investigating.
