Police on scene as 100 youths refuse to leave centre of County Durham town

Police are dealing with an incident in County Durham where approximately 100 youths have gathered.

The youngsters have congregated in Sedgefield town centre on Friday night and are refusing to leave the area, police say.

Officers are now urging parents to come and collect their children from the area.

The gathering is a breach of current Covid-19 regulations.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police are currently dealing with approx. 100 youths in the centre of Sedgefield who are refusing to leave the area, and causing ongoing issues.

"If your child is currently out in the Sedgefield area, can you go and collect them, and return them home.

"We are in the process of implementing a dispersal order for the area."

Earlier on Friday, Durham Constabulary released a warning after they received information about plans for a ‘large gathering’ of Year 10 and 11 pupils from Consett and Stanley areas to celebrate breaking up for the Christmas holidays .
