Police Ombudsman investigation into altercation between officer and schoolboy

An investigation has been launched by the Police Ombudsman following an "altercation involving a police officer and a schoolboy".

An incident is understood to have taken place after a snowball was thrown at a vehicle.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police received a report of an incident at approximately 10:20am on Irish Green Street in Limavady on Thursday, 27th February.

"It was reported that snowballs had been thrown in the area, and that one had struck a passing vehicle. It was reported that a teenager was assaulted."

It comes after a video circulating on social media was viewed more than 100,000 times.

The PSNI refused to provide a further statement on the incident saying it would be "inappropriate to comment any further" as the Office of the Police Ombudsman is investigating.

The police watchdog told Belfast Live: “We can confirm that we are investigating an altercation involving a police officer and a schoolboy which happened in Limavady last Thursday (27 February 2020).

“We were initially notified about the incident by police, and have since also received a complaint about what happened.

“Our investigators have begun the process of gathering evidence to assess the appropriateness of the officer’s actions during the incident."
