Police officers pelted with cans and eggs during four hour stand off on major city road

Police officers were reportedly pelted with eggs and cans during a four hour stand off on a major city road.

County Road in Walton was closed at around 4pm on Monday afternoon after reports of three men "hanging out of a window" .

The incident was sparked after a man ran from police on Rice Lane a few minutes before.

Although it is not yet known why two other men were also outside the window above a Subway restaurant, police officers were forced to erect a cordon from Spellow Lane to Queens Drive .

As the three men covered the faces on top of the sign, large crowds gathered either side of the main road.

Around an hour and a half after the incident began, dozens more police officers , including Matrix and police dogs were sent to the scene when disorder broke out.

It was reported that a number of people standing within the crowd began throwing items at officers who were guarding the scene.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "The extra officers were sent due to disorder after reports a crowd had gathered and people were throwing things at officers (eggs and cans reported).

"It is not believed that any officers have been injured and the disorder is currently under control."

People at the scene slammed the three men for causing the massive incident which forced traffic and public transport to be diverted around the scene.

One woman told the ECHO : “It is such a waste of resources and every single person put out by this has something better they could be doing.

"The amount of police, firefighters, paramedics that could be needed elsewhere is mad, not to mention the shop owners and their staff who are out money because of it. We don’t need this round here.”

Shortly before 8pm, the three men came down from the ledge and were arrested by officers at the scene.

All three were arrested of suspicion of possession with intent to supply while one was also arrested for a Section 18 wounding.

One shop owner who was forced to stop trading while the incident was ongoing, said they would face a huge loss to earnings.

He said: “I was tempted to just shut completely and go home but I’m hoping that I won’t lose out on too much money.”

“Four hours over teatime is a long time in my business to be closed and we could be hit really hard by this. Police worked hard to get it sorted as soon as possible but I’ve lost so much money because of those men.”
