Police officers in hazmat suits after fears arrest suspect has coronavirus

Police officers were forced to wear full protective suits and masks as a suspect appearing at a Liverpool police station for a video-link court appearance showed signs of the coronavirus.

Officers were seen outside Walton Lane station in white suits and face masks this morning.

And the ECHO can reveal police were forced to take the measures after a man in his 20s, showed potential symptoms of coronavirus. while in custody and was seen by a nurse last night.

Knowing the man would be transferred to Walton Lane police around 10am this morning to answer driving offences in court via video link, all police officials who came into contact with him donned the protective gear and equipment to ensure their safety and the public at large.

The ECHO understands police ensured he was kept away from public areas during his brief stay at the station.

The man was dealt with for driving offences and is now self isolating at home with a curfew order part of his court sentence.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "The man was transported to Walton Lane police station to appear by video link at court in relation to driving offences.

"After the man displayed potential symptoms of Covid-19 while he was in custody last night, as a precaution these measures were carried out.

"The court dealt with him via video link and he is now self isolating at home as he was issued with a curfew order as part of the court hearing."
