Police officers filmed 'joining in' with banned England chant outside pub

A police force has apologised after footage emerged allegedly showing officers joining in with England fans singing a banned football chant.

West Midlands Police said it is "sorry for any offence caused" after at least one officer could reportedly be seen chanting Ten German Bombers outside The Registry pub in Walsall following the Denmark match on Wednesday.

In the video, shared with BlackCountryLive but not released by the news platform, the policeman is said to shush the crowd outside the Leicester Street venue before shouting: "How many bombers?"

He then throws his arms in the air as the jubilant fans continue to chant the controversial song, it is claimed.

A female officer can also allegedly be seen apparently encouraging the crowd by waving her arms.

It comes after the FA said it would ban anyone taking part in "discriminatory or disrespectful" chants at Wembley.

Fans chanted the song - originally sung by schoolchildren during the Second World War - during the Croatia game with critics describing it as "ultra nationalist".

It was then referenced in an official report submitted to Uefa by the FARE network, which operates the governing body’s anti-discrimination monitoring system.

The FA said: “We always encourage our fans to positively get behind the team, and this includes supporting England in the right way, before, during and after the match.

"This message will be shared with them once again before Tuesday’s fixture, as well as thanking them for their support.

"We will also strongly condemn any behaviour at Wembley Stadium that is discriminatory or disrespectful, and we will take action where appropriate as we try to ensure all England matches are a safe and enjoyable experience."

But the chants were repeated this week as footie fans celebrated England's historic semi-final win, setting up a showdown with Italy on Sunday evening.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said of the Walsall footage: "We apologise for any offence caused by the celebrations in Walsall on Wednesday night.

"While our officers joined in with the best of intentions, we realise that the song being sung is banned by the FA and extremely distasteful.

"We are currently assessing the incident and will be speaking to the officers involved to address it, and ensure they understand the impact.

"After reaching the final of the Euros we are grateful to everyone who has conducted themselves responsibly and respectfully, and we look forward to the final on Sunday evening."
