Police officers breach coronavirus safety rules during Fife 'clap for carers' tribute

Police have fallen foul of coronavirus safety measures during a "clap for carers" tribute event in Fife.

The officers had joined the crowds gathered outside Victoria Hospital last night in solidarity with NHS staff and frontline workers but were later informally reprimanded over "breaches" of social distancing rules, reports.

At the gathering, dozens of officers failed to maintain the distance required to stop the deadly bug from spreading.

The Local Area Commander for Central Division, Fife, Chief Inspector Tom Brown says there were breaches of social distancing and advice was given to those taking part.

He told The Herald : "This event was arranged with the best intentions to provide visibility and recognition to all staff who are caring for us during this difficult time in line with the national #clapforcarers campaign.

"Unfortunately during this event there were breaches of social distancing guidelines.

"Advice was given to those taking part about the importance of social distancing to prevent future breaches and no further action was required."

Pictures and footage of the event were shared on Twitter.

Glenrothes Police tweeted: "Big thanks to all the NHS workers across the UK from all the Emergency Services who came together tonight at Victoria Hospital to show our appreciation. #OurNHS #COVID19."

Officers who took part in The Fife NHS tribute were heavily criticised on social media.

"Totally get it and a great gesture but where is the social distancing from your officers and in fact everyone else there," one Twitter user exclaimed.

So much for public gatherings of more than two people currently being banned. I’m pretty certain these lockdown rules apply to everyone?" noted another.

Elsewhere someone asked: "This is ridiculous, social distancing applies to absolutely everyone, what were you thinking?"

Last night, people across  Scotland  took to their windows, doorsteps, gardens and balconies for the third time since the lockdown to thank those fighting the deadly virus for the fourth week running.
