Police officers attacked by man they approached in Liverpool city centre

A man has been charged with assault and drugs offences after two police officers were attacked in Liverpool city centre.

Peter Hillman, 34, is accused of being behind the sickening early morning attack on the plainclothes officers in Bold Street.

Today Merseyside Police said the two officers were injured as they went to confront and detain a man "reported to be acting suspiciously" on Saturday.

The attack took place at around 3.25am.

Police confirmed Hillman, 34, of Lord Street, Southport has been charged in connection with the assault and with allegedly possessing Class A and Class B drugs.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We have charged a man with assaulting two emergency services workers and drugs offences following an incident in Liverpool city centre.

"Two plainclothes police officers were injured after detaining a man reported to be acting suspiciously on Bold Street at around 3.25am on Saturday, May 22.

"Peter Hillman, 34, of Lord Street, Southport, was charged with assaulting an emergency worker x 2 and possession of a controlled drug (Class A and Class B)."

Hillman was remanded into custody to appear at Wirral adult remand court today, Monday, May 24.
