Police officers attacked after stopping to search vehicle

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting two police officers who were attacked while carrying out a stop check.

Cheshire Police arrested a 19-year-old after assaulting the two officers in Widnes on Tuesday.

The force said that shortly after 6pm, officers were travelling in an unmarked police car and noticed a group of people acting suspiciously in Scott Avenue, Widnes.

The police pulled up behind the car the group were gathered around.

The officers then got out of the police car and began the process of searching the other vehicle and its occupants.

At that point the officers were assaulted by the vehicle’s driver, sustaining minor injuries, a police spokesperson said.

A 19-year-old man from Squires Avenue in Widnes was subsequently arrested on suspicion of assaulting emergency service workers and resisting arrest.

He is currently in custody being questioned by officers.
