Police officer who sexually assaulted two women resigns from force in disgrace

A Jekyll and Hyde police officer who groped a younger female colleague at a social event in a Perthshire hotel has seen a shameful end to his 19 year police career.

Forty-three-year-old Austin John Barrett has now resigned in disgrace from Police Scotland after being convicted at Perth Sheriff Court last month of three charges of sexual assault involving two different women.

One of the incidents took place at Crieff Hydro between December 12 and 13, 2018, when he was found guilty of repeatedly touching a woman’s bottom at the Ferntower Road hotel.

Sheriff Jamie Gilchrist also returned guilty verdicts on two further charges of sexual assault.

He repeatedly touched another woman on the leg, without her consent, at an event in Cardenden between June 3 and 26, 2018.

The third charge related to the same victim when he placed his hands inside her dress, without her consent, at a function in Kinglassie between July 3 and 26, 2018.

Barrett, whose address was given as Professional Standards, French Street, Glasgow, discovered his fate when the case was dealt with at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court.

He will be supervised by a social worker for 12 months and his name has been added to the Sex Offenders’ Register for a year.
