Police officer taken to hospital after crash closes major road

There are major delays heading out of the city tonight after a police van collided with a 4X4 car injuring an officer.

The crash occurred at 7.10pm at the roundabout between Formby bypass and Liverpool Road.

Motorists are reporting heavy traffic out of the city centre.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "At around 7.10pm officers received reports of a collision between a Merseyside Police Ford Transit van, which was en route to an incident in Southport, and a Toyota Landcruiser on the Formby bypass/Liverpool Road.

"The van was also in collision with a tree."

The spokesman said the male driver of the Toyota was checked at the scene but suffered no serious injuries.

However the male police officer, a passenger in the van, suffered a leg injury and has been taken to hospital.

A fellow officer, who was driving the van, was not seriously injured.

The force said the Formby-bound carriageway has been closed while enquiries are carried out.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information which could assist, is asked to DM @MerPolCC quoting log 771 of 4 December.
