The New South Wales police have suspended an officer over racist and sexist social media posts targeting a state Greens MP.

Police said that “after being made aware of material on a social media site” the officer, from its central metropolitan command, had been “immediately suspended”.

The member for Newtown, Jenny Leong, was revealed last week to be the target of derogatory Facebook posts by officers in four commands around Sydney and by some within police senior management.

The posts included references to Leong’s father as a “swamp monkey” and the suggestion, under a photo of the MP, that “one condom could have prevented this from happening”.

Leong has been a critic of the police’s drug sniffer dog program and introduced legislation to repeal it.

Officers have also been implicated in allegedly trolling and posting incorrect information to a social media page campaigning against the program.

It was announced on Thursday that allegations of “police misconduct” towards Leong would be investigated by the Police Integrity Commission.
