Police officer suspended after arresting girl, 6, for 'having tantrum' in school

A police officer who arrested a six-year-old girl for throwing a tantrum at school has been suspended.

Dennis Turner also detained another child - who was just eight - in a separate incident, police confirmed today.

The school resource officer made sure Kaia Rolle was cuffed, fingerprinted and charged with battery after her tantrum at Lucious and Emma Nixon Academy school in Orlando, Florida.

Orlando Police says it is now investigating the officer's conduct.

It's alleged Turner didn't get approval for this arrest, which angered Kaia's family last week .

Orlando Rolon, who is the force's chief, said: “The Orlando Police Department has a policy that addresses the arrest of a minor, and our initial finding shows the policy was not followed.

Kaia's gran was furious with school officials after the incident (wfla)

“As a grandparent of three children less than 11 years old, this is very concerning to me.”

Charges against Kaia were dropped after the family's complaint.

Her furious gran Meralyn Kirkland said: “No six-year-old child should be able to tell somebody that they had handcuffs on them and they were riding in the back of a police car and taken to a juvenile center to be fingerprinted, mug shot.

"How do you do that to a six-year-old child and because she kicked somebody? A literal mug shot of a six-year-old girl.

"They told us we had to wait a few minutes because Kaia was being fingerprinted, and when she said ‘fingerprinted’ it hit me like a tonne of bricks.

“No six-year-old child should be able to tell somebody that they had handcuffs on them and they were riding in the back of a police car and taken to a juvenile centre to be fingerprinted and (have a) mug shot.”

No further details of the arrest of the eight-year-old have been released.
