Police officer suffers multiple skull fractures after bike chase

A police officer involved in a suspected stolen bike chase has suffered multiple skull fractures, police said.

Officers on patrol at about 8.45pm on Monday in Anfield spotted a teenage boy on what was believed to be a stolen electric bike near the junction of Priory Road and Utting Avenue, prompting a chase.

As one of the officers was trying to apprehend the suspect, he fell and suffered a serious head injury. It's believed the officer may have fallen after a bicycle was thrown in his direction.

Officers are still carrying out full inquiries into how he was hurt.

On Tuesday morning the force revealed details about the extent of the officer's injuries, saying he suffered a number of fractures to his skull and facial injuries.

As the officer chased on foot after the 16-year-old suspect he fell, before getting back up to detain the boy.

While the boy was arrested, he suffered an injury to his ankle and was taken to hospital. He's since been released from hospital.

The officer was also rushed to hospital afterwards for treatment. He remains there today.

A large police presence remains at Priory Road and Utting Avenue today.

Police said a 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft, and possession of Class B drugs.

A 14-year-old female, was also arrested at the scene on suspicion of theft and has been taken to a police station, where she will be interviewed by detectives.

Police are urging people to come forward with any information.

Detective Superintendent Dave McCaughrean said: "An investigation is ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any CCTV or dashcam footage to please get in touch.”
