Police officer stabbed several times after attempting to arrest rape suspect

A police constable has been stabbed several times after attempting to arrest a rape suspect in Huyton Village, Knowsley.

Four officers on foot patrol spotted a man who they recognised was wanted on suspicion of a rape that occurred earlier this year. The 18-year-old suspect resisted arrest and stabbed a 30-year-old officer several times before attempting to run away.

Officers chased down and apprehended the suspect who has now been arrested on suspicion of rape and attempted murder.

Merseyside Police have confirmed the injured officer remains in hospital and his condition is stable and not life-threatening.

Deputy Chief Constable Carl Foulkes praised the officers and highlighted the dangers they face. “This incident highlights once again the dangers officers face every single day, putting themselves in harm’s way to deal with dangerous situations,” he said.

“The very nature of the job means officers go into challenging situations and acknowledge the risks they face.

“Despite this, officers put themselves on the front line protecting our communities every day, and any assault on an officer serves as a stark reminder of the very real dangers that officers face to keep us all safe day in, day out,” DCC Foulkes added.

"After seeing their colleague stabbed, three officers continued to attempt to arrest the man and successfully detained him and I would like to commend their bravery and that of the officer who has been injured.”
