Police officer sentenced for using 'excessive' force after pulling man from patrol car

A police officer has been fined £700 after he was found guilty of assault.

PC Matthew Thompson, 40, was convicted after an eight-hour hearing on April 8 at Loughborough Magistrates' Court.

He was found guilty of assault by grabbing a man's dreadlocks and pulling him from a patrol car.

The incident happened in Caxton Road, Carrington, on July 13 last year.

Magistrates were shown film of the incident which left David Thomas, 52, face down in a city street after police were called to deal with claims of domestic violence.

The case was adjourned until today (Tuesday, April 30) when he was sentenced at Leicester Magistrates Court.

PC Thompson was fined £700 and ordered to pay a £70 victim surcharge.

Presiding magistrate Roger Wood said: "You're a police officer and the public are entitled to expect a high standard from them. You should have known beter. You used excessive force in your reaction and he sustained minor injuries."
