Police officer sacked for paying just 10p for £1 Jaffa Cakes at charity stall

A "dishonest" West Yorkshire Police constable has been sacked for paying 10p for Jaffa Cakes that had been priced at £1 at a charity raising funds for a trip to Uganda.

PC Chris Dwyer was found guilty of gross misconduct for underpaying the two packets of Jaffa Cakes that were priced at 50p each.

PC Dwyer had underpaid for the items from Halifax Police Station's confectionary stall, where items were being sold for 50p.

It meant Dwyer should have paid £1 for his selection of two packs of Jaffas, but only paid 10p, YorkshireLive reports.

When questioned about the matter, PC Dwyer then "provided dishonest accounts" and his misconduct hearing heard that he had tried to "change and embellish" his story.

PC Dwyer, who joined West Yorkshire Police in 2017, had denied breaching police standards but was nonetheless sacked on Thursday following a misconduct hearing.

Details of the misconduct case had been published on the police's website.

The Force said: "At around 22:00 hours on 21st January, an officer attended the canteen at Halifax Police Station and emptied the charity tuck shop cash tin.

"She left 6 x 10p coins and 2 x 20p coins as a float.

"It is alleged that around 22:30 hours, PC Dwyer attended the canteen, approached the charity tuck shop, removed two packets of Jaffa cakes which were priced at 50p each, without leaving the sufficient funds to pay for them.

"The cash tin was checked and it was found to contain the same denominations of coins in the cash tin but with an extra 2 x 5p coins."

Detective Superintendent Mark Long, of West Yorkshire Police's Professional Standards Directorate, said: "This officer's actions do not fit with the values of the organisation and he has been dishonest when challenged.

"An independent legally qualified chair has found that his breach of the Standards of Professional Behaviour constituted gross misconduct and he has been dismissed from the Force."
