Police officer rescued from River Aire after getting in water to save member of public

A police officer had to be rescued from the River Aire in Leeds city centre after getting in the water to save a member of the public.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service received reports of a member of the public and a police officer in the River Aire shortly after 8pm last night (Saturday).

Members of the public were instructed by the control room operator to access an emergency throwline beside the river to assist with rescue.

The officer did successfully rescue the civilian and firefighters rescued the officer with a ladder.

The rescues happened near Sovereign Street.

Water rescue crews from Leeds and Rothwell attended the incident, along with two pumps from Hunslet.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended the incident to transport both casualties to hospital.
