NT police officer charged with child abuse material offences granted bail

The man is due to appear in court again in January. (ABC News: James Dunlevie)

A Northern Territory police officer has been granted bail in an Alice Springs court, after being charged with a number of child abuse material offences.

The man in his 30s is facing nine charges in total:

  • Three charges of possessing child abuse material obtained or accessed using a carriage service
  • Three counts of using a carriage service to transmit child abuse material
  • Two counts of using a carriage service to solicit child abuse material
  • One count of using a carriage service to groom another person to make it easier to procure a person under 16.

"The matter is under investigation by the Professional Standards Command," NT Police said in a statement.

In court, the judge said given the nature of the alleged offences, the presumption was initially against bail.

"However bail is sought ... on the basis that the defendant is someone of previous good character," the judge said.

"I am of the view that the presumptions have been overcome to the extent that bail should be granted."

The conditions include the defendant not use devices with access to the internet, not to be in the company of anyone younger than 16 without an adult, and not to loiter in or near a place frequented by children while children are present.

The man is due to appear in court again in January.
