Police officer in hospital with 'leg injury' after Formby Bypass smash

A police officer is recovering in hospital after he was injured in a  crash on the Formby Bypass.

Emergency services were called to the scene after a police van was involved in a crash with a Toyota Landcruiser at around 7.10pm on Wednesday, at the roundabout between Formby Bypass and Liverpool Road.

A police officer, who was a passenger in the van, suffered a leg injury and was taken to hospital.

The officer is still in hospital this morning, police said.

A fellow officer, who was driving the van, was not seriously injured.

The male driver of the Toyota was checked at the scene but had no serious injuries.

Photographs from the scene showed that the police van had suffered a crumpled windscreen and extensive damage to the front end.

Police said the van was on route to an incident in Southport when the accident happened. The police van hit a tree after colliding with the Toyota.

A section of the busy road was closed after the accident which caused delays in the area. The scene was later cleared.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information which could assist, is asked to DM @MerPolCC quoting log 771 of 4 December.
