Police officer 'pre-emptively' pushed man to ground before 'discovering kitchen knife'

A police officer 'pre-emptively' pushed a man who walked into the middle of a crash scene before allegedly discovering he was carrying a kitchen knife.

The confrontation was caught on camera on Sunday January 29, following a crash in Bordesley Green, Birmingham.

Video footage of the incident shows the man speaking to an unarmed officer at the scene who can be heard responding: "You're in the middle of a scene".

The officer then tries to move the man away but he responds "'Don't move me" to which he replies "Or what?"

As reported in Birmingham Live, the man can be heard answering "Or what? What do you mean 'or what'?"

The officer tells him to "get out of it" before pushing the man who goes flying backwards and lands on the ground. The man is then tackled and arrested by officers as the video clip ends.

West Midlands Police confirmed the officers had used a 'pre-emptive push' in the incident and it had been brought to the attention of the Professional Standards Department.

They added a 26-year-old man was arrested after allegedly being found in possession of a knife and assaulting an emergency worker.

A statement from the force said: "Shortly after 11pm on Sunday (29 Jan) officers were called to a collision in Belchers Lane, Bordesley Green. While dealing with the incident, an officer was approached by a man about an unrelated matter.

"The officer asked him to leave the scene, but the man persisted causing the officer to fear his intentions and use a pre-emptive push to avoid an incident, which is a recognised tactic during police training."

The statement added: "As other officers assisted in restraining the man, he was found to be in possession of a kitchen knife. The 26-year-old was arrested for possession of a knife in a public place and assaulting an emergency worker, after the officer sustained a hand injury during the encounter.

"The man has been bailed pending further enquiries.

"Our Professional Standards Department have had the incident brought to their attention and no concerns have been identified."
