A police officer was mown down as he tried to pull over a car in Coventry.

West Midlands Police said the male officer was taken to hospital after the collision on Wednesday afternoon.

While attempting to stop the car, the officer, who has not been named, was run over and the driver fled from the scene, the force said.

He was taken to hospital with injuries to his head and leg.

The car involved in the incident was recovered nearby and officers are attempting to trace the driver.

Investigators have reviewed CCTV from the area and traffic was redirected throughout the afternoon.

"It is completely unacceptable for a police officer to be injured in the line of duty," Chief Superintendent Mike O'Hara said. "He has been taken to hospital for treatment and we await further updates on his injuries. We will be offering the officer and his family our full support.

"Enquiries are well under way to trace the driver and I would urge them to do the right thing and come forward."

Officers have urged anyone with information to contact West Midlands Police through their website live chat or by calling 101.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestopppers on 0800 555 111.
