Police officer injured after man attacked and threatened with knife in terrifying robbery

A man was threatened with a knife and punched in the face in a terrifying attack in Wigan.

Police were called to King William Street in Tyldesley at around 9am on Friday (August 27).

They received reports of a personal robbery.

The victim, a man in his 40s, was threatened with a knife and punched in the face by two men.

He was able to escape and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Officers attempted to stop search a suspicious man who matched the description of one of the attackers.

He fled the scene but was later traced and searched.

An officer suffered injuries to the hand and face and was taken to hospital for treatment.

A 16-year-old boy and a man in his 50s were arrested on suspicion of assault of a police officer.

No arrests have been made in relation to the robbery and enquiries are ongoing, a spokesman for GMP said.

In a statement, the force said: “Police were called at 9am to a report of a personal robbery at a bus stop on King William Street, Tyldesley.

“The victim - a man in his 40s - was threatened with a knife and was punched to the face but was able to escape from two men - both dressed in black hoodies and one the offenders described as a white man with ginger hair - and was taken to hospital by police as a precaution.

“Officers attempted to stop search a suspicious male who matched the description of one of the robbery offenders but made off before later being traced and searched.

“An officer suffered injuries to the hand and face and was taken to hospital for treatment.

“A 16-year-old boy and a man in his 50s were arrested on suspicion of assault of a police officer.

“No arrests have been made in relation to the robbery and enquiries are ongoing.”
