Police officer injured after driver crashes into two cars while fleeing scene of Northern Quarter brawl

A police officer was injured after a driver crashed a Mercedes into two cars while speeding away from the scene of a city centre brawl.

Police were called to Newton Street in the Northern Quarter at around 2.30am on Sunday, a GMP spokesman said.

One person was arrested on suspicion of theft.

Another suspect drove off from the scene in a Mercedes, before crashing into an Audi and Seat car. The driver then sped away without stopping.

A GMP spokesman described the officer's injuries as 'minor'.

Newton Street was cordoned off for several hours following the incident.

Specialist officers were seen combing the area for evidence until 4.30am.

A GMP spokesman said: "We were called to reports of an incident on Newton Street at about 2.30am.

The street was cordoned off for several hours (ASP)

"It looks like there was a male fighting other people. Someone has driven off from the scene and collided with two vehicles.

"An officer suffered minor injuries. The reason why there was a cordon was due to the damaged cars.

"The driver left the scene."
