Police officer left with serious facial injuries after being called to deal with knifeman

A police officer has been left seriously injured after responding to a domestic incident where a man had a knife in Bolton.

A 25 year-old man has been arrested following the incident which saw a taser deployed and also left a delivery driver injured.

Police were called to Brandforth Gardens in Westhoughton at 8.50am this morning (Monday) to "reports of a domestic incident involving a man with a knife" Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

A delivery driver, a man in his thirties, had been assaulted at the scene, they added.

Specialist officers were dispatched and a Taser was deployed before a man was detained.

A male officer received serious facial injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The delivery driver suffered cuts to his face and damage to his vehicle and clothing.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of an aggravated public order offence, assault, racially aggravated public order offence involving a police officer, section 47 assault of an emergency worker and affray.

The detained man was initially taken to hospital as a precaution before being later discharged and taken to custody.

The officer has since been released from hospital and has resumed his duty, GMP said.

Inspector John Walsh, of GMP's Bolton district, said: "This was a terrible incident for one of our officers to be subject to but it goes to show the daily commitment we have to keep people in our community safe.

"Thankfully the officer has been treated for his injuries and has shown terrific dedication in returning to duty to see out the remainder of his shift for the day.

"We continue to do all we can for those who need our help and encourage those who require us do so immediately online, via 101 or 999 always in an emergency."
