Police officer in hospital after crash while responding to 'ongoing incident'

A police officer is in hospital after crashing while responding to an 'ongoing incident'.

The smash happened at around 4am on Monday morning in Oldham.

Greater Manchester Police said the officer was travelling down Oldham Way towards Featherstall Road when their vehicle collided with the kerb and 'street furniture'.

The officer suffered back injuries and remains in hospital.

The incident is being investigated by the Force Driver Standards Board.

Pictures shared on social media showed a liveried BMW vehicle with serious damage at the Featherstall roundabout.

The vehicle's front bumper appears to have been ripped off, the front wheel detached and driver's airbag deployed.

No one else was involved in the collision, GMP said.

In a statement, GMP said: "Just after 4.00am on Monday 28 June, a police officer was attending an ongoing incident, travelling along Oldham Way towards Featherstall Road, Oldham.

"On approaching Featherstall Road roundabout, the officer's vehicle collided with the kerb and street furniture.

"As a result of the collision, the officer suffered injuries to their back and remains in hospital undergoing treatment.

"There were no others involved in the collision.

"The incident is currently being investigated by the Force Driver Standards Board."
