Police officer in gross misconduct probe after pensioner, 80, killed in crash

An officer whose unmarked BMW police car struck and killed a pensioner while he crossed the road is being investigated for gross misconduct.

Leslie Waterfield was hit by the vehicle as he walked half a mile from his home at the start of February.

The 80-year-old was making his way across Warrington Road, in Penketh, when the fatal accident took place.

Mr Waterfield, who lived in the same district of the town, died at the scene.

Watchdog investigators are now probing the police officer for gross misconduct.

He will soon be officially interviewed about the tragedy.

Cheshire Police has confirmed the officer is currently on restricted duties.

That means he is not driving for the force, at this stage, and is pursuing a desk-based role.

The crash happened at about 7.30pm on February 3, prompting an immediate investigation by the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), who automatically enquire into all deaths involving officers.

The unmarked dark-coloured police car which hit Mr Wakefield was not responding to an emergency call, but it is still unclear where it was heading.

Details are yet to emerge about where Mr Wakefield was walking to when he was struck.

Road closures were put in place between Farnworth Road and Liverpool Road as forensic officers launched an enquiry at the scene.

A cordon was erected at a number of junctions near the scene of the crash, which happened close to the Sportsmans Arms pub.

An IOPC spokeswoman said: "This investigation is progressing well.

"An officer from Cheshire Constabulary has been informed that they are under investigation for gross misconduct and will be interviewed in due course.

"Our sympathies remain with all those affected by the incident.”

This enquiry mirrors that of a similar investigation on Merseyside where another police officer is facing scrutiny for potential gross misconduct after a fatal collision in Wirral.

William Horne, 84, was struck by a police car as he crossed the road while going to pick up a newspaper in Spital.
