Police officer in hospital 'after being hit by car that sped off' in Woodford Green

A police officer is in hospital after being hit by a car which then sped off.

The officer was struck at around 12.10am tonight in Chigwell Road, Woodford Green, London.

A passerby claims the officer was thrown up into the air and has been rushed to hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said he is not in a 'critical condition'.

People at the scene said the car involved was a Mini Cooper and was found three miles away, but the Met Police could not confirm this.

Pictures from the scene show police kit strewn along the road after the incident, including boots and a radio.

Police tape has cordoned off the road while officers are shown at the scene, one with a carrier bag.

Redbridge MPS tweeted: "A search is being carried out for the driver who left the scene.

The spokeswoman could not confirm whether the road was still shut off.

Another spokeswoman later confirmed the officer was not in a critical condition.
