Police officer in court alleged to have hit man with Taser on M5

An Avon and Somerset Police officer is to stand trial for allegedly hitting a man with a taser.

PC James Clements has been charged with actual bodily harm and common assault.

He pleaded not guilty to the crimes when he appeared at Bristol Magistrates Court today (June 17) for the first hearing.

The 31-year-old will now stand trial at Bristol Crown Court on July 18.

The charges relate to an incident on December 4, 2018 on the M5 slip road at junction 14 (Falfield Interchange) when it was alleged a Taser was used as an object to strike a man, who sustained injuries.

An investigation was launched by the Independent Office for Police Conduct after a complaint was made by the man’s family.

The results of that investigation have not been revealed by the organisation.

It is not yet known what action, if any, Avon and Somerset police have taken regarding the alleged incident.
