Police officer 'in bad way with fractured skull' after breaking up 'teen brawl'

A police officer has been left "in a bad way" with horrific head injuries after trying to break up a fight outside a college, according to reports.

The dad-of-three was taken to hospital with serious wounds after responding to an incident in Common Lane, Scunthorpe, on Friday afternoon, Humberside Police confirmed in a statement.

On receiving a 999 call about a violent fight involving a 15-year-old, he rushed to John Leggot College with a colleague.

The pair tried to disperse the brawl but during the scuffle he was set upon and viciously beaten by a 23-year-old, The Sun reports.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of GBH in relation to the initial fight and a 23-year-old for the same offence in relation to the officer.

The policeman, who has served with the Humberside force for more than 20 years, is recovering and in a non-life-threatening condition but still battling severe injuries.

His relative said: “He had been called into a college to make an arrest, and one of the lad’s mates or relatives, he had been talking to, joined in.

“They must have used some force to cause the injuries they have, to fracture somebody’s skull.

“Luckily, he is going to be okay, as far as I am aware. But he is in a bad way right now."

Police sources said no weapons were involved in the attack, which Home Secretary Priti Patel branded "shocking and senseless".

Detective Chief Inspector Craig Nicholson, of Humberside Police, said: “Our investigation remains ongoing into this incident and we will be following every enquiry to establish the full circumstances.

“We wish to thank the public for the warm wishes towards our officer. They are very much appreciated."
