Police officer hit by Volkswagen on M62 as driver sped off from the hard shoulder

A police officer suffered cuts and bruises after he was knocked to the ground by a car which had stopped on the hard shoulder of the M62.

The incident happened at 5.49pm on Wednesday, February 19, when two officers from West Yorkshire Police attended the scene of a broken down vehicle.

They pulled onto the hard shoulder to assist the driver of a white Ford Transit van on the westbound carriageway, roughly half a mile before junction 24 for Ainley Top.

A dark grey Volkswagen estate then also pulled onto the hard shoulder near the scene.

When one of the officers approached the Volkswagen to speak to the driver, they sped off and struck the officer with their wing mirror. The impact forced the officer to the ground and he suffered several cuts and bruises.

The force is now appealing for anyone with information to come forward. They are particularly keen to hear from people who may have dashcam footage of the incident.

People can get in touch by calling 101 or via the live chat service on the West Yorkshire Police website. In both instances, you should quote log 1225 of February 19, 2020.
